IBMS BoneKEy Online Forum - When to Treat Bone Fragility, 2010: FRAX® and Beyond
The third IBMS BoneKEy Online Forum took place on Tuesday, February 16th. 127 attendees listened to the Forum, which included a PowerPoint presentation by John A. Kanis and an ensuing panel discussion. Participants discussed the components of FRAX and how it differs from other approaches used to identify those at risk for fractures; compared the European and US approach to incorporating FRAX into existing guidelines; discussed whether FRAX should override the T-score; and considered how to best set intervention thresholds, among other important issues. Teriparatide: Variations on the Theme of a 2-Year Therapeutic Course
By Natalie E. Cusano and John P. Bilezikian
Considering that most patients who will be treated with teriparatide or PTH(1-84) have previously received an antiresorptive drug, what is preferable: to add the osteoanabolic agent to the antiresorptive one or to switch from the antiresorptive drug to the osteoanabolic agent alone? The authors analyze two recent J Clin Endocrinol Metab. studies, one by Cosman et al. and the other by Finkelstein et al., as they attempt to answer this important clinical question.
